Sacred Rhetoric Conference

Winebrenner Theological Seminary to Host Sacred Rhetoric Conference

A Sacred Rhetoric Conference will be hosted by Winebrenner Theological Seminary on May 31 – June 2, 2017. Gather with leaders for this interdisciplinary event to stretch and challenge participants with world-class speakers, interactive dialogue, and practical training. The event is devoted to the consideration of discourses of religion, both as it is depicted in various media formats and how religious practitioners discuss issues within confessional communities.  Paper topics will cover a wide array of issues including questions of race and gender in relation to religion.  Other sessions will examine the intersection of religion and culture by documenting how religious communities engage with secular culture.  The ultimate goal of the conference is to think about how we talk about religion and religious issues.  There will also be a screening of the award-winning documentary, The Rule, a film by Bongiorno Productions, followed by an opportunity to speak with the producers of the movie.

For information about the conference please call, 419-434-4200 or visit winebrenner.edu.

Two primary speakers, Ronald C. Arnett and Tom Beaudoin, will be featured at the Sacred Rhetoric Conference.

Ronald C. Arnett (Ph.D., Ohio University) is chair and professor of the Department of Communication & Rhetorical Studies, The Patricia Doherty Yoder and Ronald Wolfe Endowed Chair in Communication Ethics at Duquesne University, and the Henry Koren, C.S.Sp., Endowed Chair for Scholarly Excellence (2010–2015). He is the author/coauthor of ten books and co-editor of four books. Speaker Arnett

Tom Beaudoin (Ph.D., Boston College) is associate professor of religion at Fordham University in New York City, where he teaches courses on religion, secularity, and theology. He currently serves as past-president of the Association of Practical Theology. For the past twenty years, his research has focused on the relationship between "spiritual" and "secular" practices, studying the powers of attention ingredient to how people learn to find something from their culture of special significance for making their way through life. Speaker Beaudoin
