RACCOON RUN WINTER SPORTS, HPD, FINDLAY

Raccoon Run Winter Sports Center Season Begins December 19 through March 13: Discover Healthy Alternatives During the Winter Season in the Hancock Parks. The Raccoon Run Winter Sports Center at Riverbend Recreation Area’s Shelter 3 in the Big Oaks Area will be open from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM on weekends and some holidays from December 18, 2015 through March 13, 2016. Snowshoes and cross-country skis will be available for rent when there is a solid snow base of 4 to 6 inches. Cross-country ski trails are groomed, which make them ideal for beginners. Equipment rental rates for snowshoes and cross-country skis are $7.00 per hour or $20.00 per day. Exact cash or checks are preferred. Credit cards are not accepted. For groups of eight or more, a $.50 discount is available with advance reservations and payment at the Hancock Park District office. Group reservations are not scheduled during the Raccoon Run Winter Sport Center’s regular hours. A $.50 discount is also offered for participants with a Golden Buckeye card. Rentals are available on a first come, first served basis. Participants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult and have a Rental Agreement signed by an adult 18 years of age or older. A warming fire in the wood burning fireplace and light refreshments will be available. For current information on snow conditions, call 419-424-1555. Winter sports is a healthy alternative for fun and fitness during the winter season. Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are excellent ways to exercise, socialize, and enjoy scenic views.

Homeschoolers in the Park: Physics and Experiment

Register with $3 per child by 4:30 PM on Wednesday, February 24 A program for homeschoolers about physics and experiments will be held at Riverbend Recreation Area’s Brugeman Lodge on Wednesday, March 2 from 12:30-1:30 PM. Children will explore physics through experiments and reactions. Students will learn about osmosis and also make volcanos and slime. Physics and experiments, which is the seventh class in a series, is for children ages 9-13. Register with $3 per child by 4:30 PM on Wednesday, February 24. A medical form is required and available online and at the Hancock Park District office. The Homeschoolers in the Park program has classes scheduled for the first Wednesday of each month until June. Students explore different science based curriculum programs, such as earth, physical and life science. There will also be an outdoor recreation session. Each class will cover some of Ohio’s teaching standards in a fun and exciting way. Most of the classes will be held at Oakwoods Nature Preserve; however, other parks in Hancock County may be visited throughout the series. Register with $3 per child for an individual month. This program will follow Findlay City Schools for cancellations due to weather. Riverbend Recreation Area is located at 16618 TR 208, off SR 568, east of Findlay. PROMEDICA FOSTORIA COMMUNITY HOSPITAL FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES 2016 – 2017 SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOSTORIA, OHIO, January 22, 2016 – Fostoria area students pursuing degrees in health care are encouraged to apply for scholarships through the ProMedica Fostoria Community Hospital Foundation. Scholarships in amounts from $1,000 to $1,500 will be awarded for the 2016 – 2017 academic year. The Foundation annually administers four scholarship funds. The J.L. Murphy Memorial Fund, J.A. Murray Memorial Scholarship Fund, G.H.W. Bruggemann Memorial Scholarship Fund, and Ruth Nichols Sollars Nursing Education Scholarship Fund were established by former Fostoria area physicians, nurses and their families in support of health care career education. Eligibility requirements are specific to each fund based on the establishing donor’s request, and are listed on the application. Scholarship applications are available online at promedica.org/givefostoria and at the hospital welcome desk/switchboard inside entrance 1. Completed applications will be accepted February 1 – 29, 2016. Past applicants may reapply. The scholarship awards will be announced in April following by a scholarship winner recognition event in May. In 2015, nine local students received a total of $11,500 in scholarships from the Foundation. BVHS associates, current college students and high school seniors entering college are eligible to apply.
